Cummare's Italian Ristorante

Cummare’s Italian Restaurant is in the historic Hennessy building, built in 1896 and located in downtown Murphysboro. The building has maintained much of its original charm and makes a cozy spot to enjoy Italian family recipes. The original owner arrived in the United States as a teenager from Sicily and worked in family restaurants until opening his own.

The food can be described as classic Italian-American comfort food with a wide variety of pasta options topped with homemade sauces. The Marinara and Alfredo sauces are staples from the original family owners, who retired after 12 years owning the restaurant. Bolognese and Pesto Cream are new sauces added to the menu by the new owner in 2020, who moved from Chicago to takeover but has deep roots in the Southern Illinois restaurant business. Cummare’s also makes homemade pizza dough and cooks with a brick-style pizza oven.

Every weekend, special dishes and cocktails are featured that use more creativity and fuse Italian with other country’s cuisines. Cummare’s offers a pizza and pasta lunch buffet Tuesday-Friday 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with dinner hours Tuesday-Saturday 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Reservations are suggested.
